BArcelona needed Lamine Yamal’s penalty with the last kick of the match to salvage a 1-1 draw with Newcastle. Bayern Munich and Atletico Madrid took a big step towards the quarter-finals of the Champions League with big wins on Tuesday. Liverpool and Barcelona still have work to do.

Bayern defeated Atalanta 6-1 without starting scorer Harry Kane. And Atlético made under-pressure Tottenham manager Igor Tudor pay for his bold decision to leave first-choice goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario out, taking a 3-0 lead inside 15 minutes. The Spanish giants ultimately won 5-2.

Liverpool will need to overturn their 1-0 loss to Galatasaray in the second leg at Anfield next week. Galatasaray are in an advantageous position against Liverpool. First it was Juventus and now Liverpool. Galatasaray have defeated the giants of European football one after another. The Turkish champions won the first leg 1-0 in Istanbul, giving them the advantage of a draw in the round of 16.

Galatasaray beat Liverpool for the second time

Mario Lemina’s header in the 7th minute ensured victory for Galatasaray, with Juventus winning 7-5 on aggregate in the playoffs. The second leg will be played at Anfield next Wednesday. “We want to win there too and get to the quarterfinals,” Lemina said.

It was Galatasaray’s second win against Liverpool this season, having won by the same scoreline in the league match.

Victor Osimhen’s late shot was ruled out for offside, giving Merseyside a chance to further extend their lead. Liverpool’s handball shot by Ibrahima Konate was ruled out by VAR.

“Liverpool is a huge club and they have quality players. We did what we had to do here, we won, but it’s not over yet,” said Galatasaray manager Okan Buruk.
