Mexico takes on Brazil in the race to host the 2029 Club World Cup

IIf there’s any country that excels in soccer, it’s Brazil. As the birthplace of Jogo Bonito and a soccer-loving country, it is a natural candidate for an event related to the sport. However, in addition to Morocco, Mexico has also entered the race to host the next Club World Cup.

FIFA is already analyzing venues for the 2029 Club World Cup

Following the success of the 2025 Club World Cup, the most ambitious international club tournament is already planning its next chapter. FIFA is already working on selecting a venue for the 2029 edition, with the process expected to be finalized between December 2026 and March 2027.

The tournament underwent historic changes with a new 32-team format and was a huge success as it approached a World Cup format. Chelsea won the tournament, which was held in the United States, defeating PSG in the final at MetLife Stadium.

The world’s top soccer body, led by Gianni Infantino, is currently considering proposals from countries interested in hosting the tournament.

Brazil, who has World Cup experience, raises his hand.

One of the first countries to signal its intention to host the 2029 Club World Cup was the Brazilian Football Confederation. The South American country relies on its experience in hosting major sporting events and the infrastructure left behind from the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

Brazil has modern stadiums in several cities, extensive hotels and transportation facilities, and a unique soccer culture. These characteristics make it a strong candidate to host a tournament that could be expanded to 48 teams, which FIFA is considering for future events.

Morocco joins the competition with ambitious projects

Morocco entered the soccer world with a strong national team. They have proven to be a strong team at the moment, having participated in the last World Cup and finishing runners-up in the African Cup of Nations, and in terms of soccer, they are even stronger than Brazil. The African country has invested heavily in its sports infrastructure in recent years and has demonstrated its organizational capabilities in tournaments on different continents. Additionally, the country will be one of the hosts of the 2030 FIFA World Cup, so the Club World Cup could be a rehearsal of sorts for that global event.

Mexico could host the next Club World Cup

In recent weeks, another candidate has entered the fray: Mexico. The country has modern stadiums and constant experience in hosting international events.

In fact, the 2026 World Cup will host matches at several Mexican stadiums, including the historic Estadio Azteca, Estadio Akron, and Estadio BBVA.

For Liga MX president Mikel Arriola, this is why the country has solid grounds to aspire to host the tournament.

Mexico has a strong position in FIFA and is the 7th most valuable federation in FIFA, so I think that will help us achieve our goals now that the club tournament is approaching

Mikel Arriola

“Few countries like Mexico have the capacity and connectivity infrastructure to guarantee all the other factors. If the next Club World Cup is in 2027 and the next in 2029, we would love to be there,” he added.

Experience at the next World Cup will be decisive in determining whether Mexico has a real chance of competing with Brazil and Morocco.
