Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson expressed immense pride in his side’s performance on Saturday night after their side lost 4-2 to Chelsea in the FA Cup fifth round, which pushed the Premier League giants to the brink.
Despite the loss, Parkinson highlighted his team’s calmness and tactical execution against elite opponents. “I’m most proud of the players tonight,” Parkinson told TNT Sports after the game.
I thought we acquitted ourselves really well. I think it was a close game, and that’s to our credit. There are a lot of things to be happy about in our play – not just the pressing, the work, the discipline, but also some of the football we played.
With celebrity owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenny watching from the stands, an ambitious Wales team looked poised for a historic upset. Wrexham took the lead in the 18th minute when Sam Smith found the back of the net and silenced the Stamford Bridge crowd.
Late drama and VAR controversy
Chelsea managed to equalize before half-time after a run of bad luck for the visitors, as Wrexham goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo scored an own goal in the 40th minute. However, the Red Dragons refused to falter and regained a 2-1 lead with a goal from Callum Doyle in the 78th minute.
The lead was short-lived as Chelsea’s Josh Achiampong equalized in the 82nd minute, sending the match into a frenzied conclusion. Wrexham’s mountain got even steeper when George Dobson was shown a red card in the 93rd minute, leaving the visiting team short heading into extra time.
Chelsea’s depth was finally confirmed in the extra session. Alejandro Garnacho put the Blues ahead in the 96th minute, and João Pedro scored in the 120th minute to seal a 4-2 victory.
Parkinson also mentioned the introduction of Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology, which has played a role in officiating intense matches.
Build on performance
“I thought we had a threat tonight, and I knew we would,” Parkinson said. “We didn’t come here tonight to stop Chelsea. We knew we could play and we did. It’s a real shame that our first VAR experience turned out like this.”
Although their hopes of reaching the quarter-finals were dashed in London, this performance further strengthened Wrexham’s reputation as a team capable of competing well above their current league position. For Parkinson, the takeaway was an identity for his team on the world stage.
“We didn’t just come here to protect,” Parkinson said. “We showed we can play and that’s what we take from tonight.”
