Messi surpasses himself again: Inter Miami is better than Barcelona

TThe only real competition is who you see in the mirror, and Lionel Messi says he has just surpassed himself. The Argentine captain made history after scoring his first two goals of the year for Inter Miami in the Major League Soccer regular season match against Orlando City (2-4 in favor of Javier Mascherano’s team).

With over 20 years of experience, Leo has not only reached the goalscoring record set during the Golden Era while wearing Barcelona colors, but has also managed to surpass it.

Leo defeats his biggest rival – himself

Since joining Rose in 2004, Leo is the club where he has spent most of his professional career training and has left an indelible mark season after season. From winning 35 titles to scoring goals that made multiple fans scream, Messi lived his greatest sporting era in the Barcelona jersey.

In 778 games played for Bara, ’10’ scored a total of 672 goals in all competitions, which equates to an average of 0.86 goals per game. This number is surprising to say the least, but what surprises football fans is that there is someone who has already surpassed this number… and that someone is himself.

The 38-year-old Argentine has transformed MLS and the club itself since joining Inter Miami in 2023. His image has not only attracted thousands of fans to the league, but has also helped David Beckham’s side win four titles: the League Cup, Supporters’ Shield, Conference Champions and most recently, the MLS Cup.

However, Boravip said Leo has continued to show his accuracy and scoring ability in recent years, currently scoring a total of 79 goals in 90 games, which equates to 0.88 goals per game.

So as of early 2026, even Barcelona’s Messi won’t have a higher goals average than Miami’s Leo. The strange and most surprising thing about this is that Lionel can continue to increase these numbers by renewing his contract until December 2028.

Meanwhile, his next goal will be against DC United on Saturday, March 7th, when Inter Miami will visit M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore, Maryland.
