FC Barcelona just suffered a huge blow after failing to live up to its promise of a come-from-behind victory over Atltico Madrid in the second leg of the Copa del Rey semi-finals. This defeat leaves the Catalan club without another domestic trophy and enters a crucial period of the season in which they will essentially be playing in the UEFA Champions League for the rest of their lives.
They are playing for their lives in the Champions League.
After the Copa del Rey, it’s time for the Blaugrana to turn the page, especially considering they remain leaders of La Liga with a four-point advantage over Real Madrid in the La Liga title race – a difference that could prove decisive if they can maintain their consistency in the Spanish league.
However, one of the biggest concerns at the moment is the upcoming Champions League round of 16 draw. Hansi Flick’s side will face Newcastle United in the knockout stages, but they have qualified directly, and defeat would be a major setback for their European ambitions.
Barcelona first face Athletic Club in La Liga on March 7th, followed by the Premier League side in the first leg of the Champions League Round of 16 on March 10th.
They next face Sevilla on March 15, before concluding with a draw against the Magpies on March 18 that could decide the 2026 Champions League campaign.
This means that Bala could lose top spot in the league in just a month, as happened earlier this season, and at the same time they have everything in Europe at stake and one bad result could derail their Champions League title hopes.
Should we give Hansi Flick and his coaching staff our full attention as the season reaches its most important phase?
