Taylor Swift has emerged as a major supporter of the 2026 FIFA World Cup in America

aAs the countdown to the 2026 FIFA World Cup accelerates, Inglewood’s mayor is keen to highlight the lessons of pop culture mega-events, particularly Taylor Swift’s record-breaking concert, and seek to reassure residents, businesses and international visitors that the city’s preparations are on track.

Mayor James T. Butts Jr. has repeatedly cited the logistical feats of accommodating large concert and sports crowds at SoFi Stadium, citing Swift’s Elas Tour residency as a notable example, as evidence that Inglewood can seamlessly pivot to hosting some of the world’s most-watched soccer games this summer.

Pop show as rehearsal for global sports

Swift’s Ella Tour generated historic demand and multiple sold-out shows as she played consecutive nights at SoFi Stadium. This is a feat that few artists have ever achieved in a single venue.

The enormous density of arriving and departing fans, coordination with transit agencies, and strong security presence all provided city leaders and safety officials with valuable operational experience.

For comparison, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department deployed security resources comparable to those used at the 2022 Super Bowl during Swift’s concert, showing how seriously law enforcement treated the logistical challenges of admitting large audiences.

City officials and planners said the series of major events effectively served as a “dry run” to identify and address pressure points long before FIFA’s massive influx of international fans arrived in June.

On paper, the similarities are striking. Adapting SoFi Stadium to large-scale concerts foreshadows similar strategies required on World Cup game days, when tens of thousands of spectators repeatedly flock to Inglewood during the tournament.

Butts and other organizers also emphasize the economic benefits that come with such high-profile events.

Experts say the value generated by large gatherings, from the Super Bowl to a Swift concert, could rival the expected economic impact from a World Cup match in the region, highlighting the financial stakes of local businesses and tax revenue.

The design of the SoFi Stadium is also part of the conversation. The stadium, which opened in 2020 and has been expanded to accommodate more than 100,000 attendees for major events, has already hosted everything from the Super Bowl to the CONCACAF Gold Cup Final and will be renovated for World Cup games this summer.

With fans expected to gather at SoFi Stadium and the surrounding area, Butts cited concerns about the impact on daily life.

“We want to maintain the health of our neighborhoods,” he said, acknowledging that the influx of visitors presents both opportunities and challenges for residents in and around the stadium district.

The city’s proximity to Los Angeles and Los Angeles International Airport makes it a natural base for international travel during tournaments this summer.

The 2026 World Cup, co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico, is one of the largest tournaments in history, with 48 teams competing in 16 host cities, including Inglewood.
