a A new chapter in soccer history is about to be written thanks to Lionel Messi. The Argentine star is looking to make history by scoring his first two goals of the year in Inter Miami’s return game against Orlando City (2-4) in the Major League Soccer regular season.
The number 10 is just two goals away from reaching 900 career goals in all competitions. When can he reach this milestone?
Messi doesn’t stop
Despite losing the MLS season opener to LAFC (3-0), Javier Mascherano’s team earned their first away win against Orlando and their first win of the season thanks to goals from Matteo Silvetti, Telasco Segovia and a brace from Leo.
With an assist from Segovia in the 49th minute and an accurate and clean free kick in the 90th, Leo added to his total of 898 goals. Since his professional debut in 2005, when he scored his first competitive goal against Albacete, he has extended his scoring streak to 22 years, becoming one of the few players in soccer history to achieve this feat.
The only player to have scored at least one official goal in a row is Cristiano Ronaldo, who scored 25 goals in a row from 2002 to 2026. Before retiring, Zlatan Ibrahimovic had scored in 24 different calendar years, although not all of them were strictly consecutive.
More than 20 years after that first goal, Leo is now two goals away from reaching 900 goals.
The truth is, Leo may have a chance to reach that number in MLS Round 3 on Saturday, March 7, when Inter Miami visits DC United at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore.
Before Sunday the 15th in Round 4 of the American League against Charlotte FC (a milestone that could also be reached), Leo and company will face Nashville SC in the first leg of the Concacaf Champions League Round of 16 at GEODIS Park on Thursday the 12th, and again in the second leg on the 19th.
Washington or Nashville? Will that happen in an MLS or Concacaf match? What is certain is that it will be unforgettable.
