TThe tension at Anfield was palpable from the start of Liverpool’s game against West Ham United, and it wasn’t exactly their opponents’ fault. The release of Arne Slott from the starting XI sparked criticism across social media after the Reds failed to include Rio Ngmoha in their starting XI.

This decision allowed Joe Gomez to start, but was heavily criticized by supporters who believed the young Gumoha was the right choice. However, Slott has made it clear that the club do not want to put too much pressure on the player and want to develop him at a measured pace, with the aim of managing expectations for a talent already being dubbed the ‘new Raheem Sterling’.

With the game already tilting in Liverpool’s favor, Arne Slott decided it was time to give time to his academy treasure. Rio Ngmoha, just 17 years old, came on as a substitute for Hugo Ekitike and in just 15 minutes proved why his reputation continues to grow rapidly.

The young winger had the crowd on their feet with his fearless play, full of confidence and individual technique.

The decisive moment came when Ngmoha received the ball on the left. He showed no signs of being nervous, as he took on Matheus Fernandes with a powerful dribble and headed straight for the penalty area, which was guarded by the experienced Aaron Wan-Bissaka. In a series of careful moves that forced the Irons defenders to retreat, the teenager created space and fired a shot that pushed goalkeeper Mads Hermansen over the edge.

Although he only touched the ball six times, the efficiency and visual impact of his performance is undeniable. Ngumoha isn’t just looking for minutes, he’s looking for a starring role. His ability to control defenders almost twice his age is a testament to the maturity of his football.

Liverpool are due to play two consecutive games against Wolves over the next six days and today’s performance will ensure Ngmoha will be in contention for a starting spot, especially next Friday’s FA Cup clash and then Tuesday’s Premier League game. At Anfield, the conversation is no longer about absences, but about the seemingly limitless ceiling of the teenage star, who shone in the 5-2 win over West Ham.
