WWith the winning goal and another corner flag dance, Vincius Junior had the final say in taking Real Madrid into the Round of 16 of the Champions League in Wednesday’s emotional rematch with Benfica.
Defending champions Paris Saint-Germain also advanced from the play-offs, but Atalanta completed a remarkable comeback with a last-minute goal to maintain Italy’s involvement in the competition.
Vincius, who played a week after being the target of racial abuse allegations in the first leg against Benfica, scored his team’s second goal in the 80th minute at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium, capping off Madrid’s 2-1 victory over the Portuguese international and a 3-1 aggregate win.
The Brazilian star celebrated his goal by dancing next to the corner flag, just like he did last week.
PSG and Atalanta win
Benfica took the lead in the 14th minute with a goal from Rafa Silva, which at one point tied the score at 1-1 on aggregate, but Aurelien Choameni equalized two minutes later.
PSG, who won the Champions League for the first time last season, were not as good as Monaco, but they drew 2-2 and won 5-4 on aggregate.
Atalanta substitute Lazar Samardzic converted the penalty spot with the final kick in the eighth minute of second-half stoppage time against Borussia Dortmund following a video review, sealing a 4-1 win that night and a 4-3 aggregate victory.
