Coach Javier El Vasco Aguirre is finalizing the details of the players who will be included in the final squad for the 2026 World Cup, but in the meantime Gilberto Mora remains sidelined, putting his presence at the world’s biggest football festival in doubt.
Regarding Mora’s fitness, the Mexican coach has provided recent details that confirm many suspicions, although no firm date has been set for his return.
What happened to Gilberto Mora?
Gilberto Mora suffers from pubodynia, an injury to the pubic area that is usually very deceptive. Due to the condition, the young Mexican player has not played for either his club Xolos de Tijuana or the Mexican national team since mid-January.
It is speculated that Gilberto Mora will be visiting various doctors, seeking some perspective and trying to avoid surgery at all costs, but so far it is not known exactly how long he will be without blood circulation.
Coach Mora, along with his team and the Mexican national team’s medical staff, opted for conservative treatment based on rest and rehabilitation, which, unlike other types of injuries, does not have a precise recovery time and complicates sports planning.
Initial diagnosis in Santa Monica raised the possibility of surgery, but there were no guarantees about the recovery period. Experts consulted in Pittsburgh then recommended rest to avoid major risks.
That is why the club has chosen to act with caution, following the recommendations of the doctors and the national team, led by Rafaela Pimenta, who are currently leading the monitoring of the incident.
Coach Aguirre confirms Mora’s absence
Before the friendly against Iceland, coach Javier Aguirre spoke frankly about the current situation with his midfielders.
It’s a pretty complicated injury and they’re looking for a second or third medical opinion… At the moment, he’s not available to Tijuana or to us.
Aguirre also noted that he is in constant communication with experts and acknowledged that even the coaching staff cannot predict when he will return to competition.
“His youth and mentality will help him, but as far as pain is concerned, it’s impossible to ask for more from the body,” the strategist added.
Everything seems to indicate that Gilberto Mora has secured his place in the Mexican national team. Therefore, the priority is to rest in order to arrive at the tournament physically enriched, as opposed to other players who try to return to action in order to show the Mexican strategists that they can represent Mexico at the next World Cup in top time.
