Real Madrid have sent UEFA the results of their investigation into what happened at Da Luz during last Tuesday’s first leg of the Champions League round of 16 play-off between Benfica and the Whites.
As MARCA revealed yesterday, the white club gathered information about what happened at the Benfica Stadium after Vinicius’ goal, after Vinicius accused Benfica’s Argentine player Prestianni of insulting him, before match referee François Rexetier suspended the match, invoking anti-racism protocols.
Vinicius Junior tells referee and Jos Mourinho that Prestiani racially insulted him
Real Madrid’s investigation mainly focused on what happened in the stands at the Estadio da Luz, where some home fans made racist gestures towards Madrid players, particularly Vinicius. They believe that Mr. Prestiani’s charges of insulting Brazilians will be difficult to prove. The Benfica player is said to have repeatedly called the Madrid winger a “monkey” despite hiding his face with his shirt.
The club’s statement is below:
Real Madrid CF announced today that it has provided UEFA with all available evidence regarding the incident that occurred during our team’s Champions League match against SL Benfica in Lisbon on Tuesday, February 17th.“Our club has been actively cooperating with the investigation launched by UEFA following an unacceptable incident of racism experienced during a match. Real Madrid would like to thank everyone from all over the world of football for their support and love for Vinicius Junior. Real Madrid will continue to work together with all institutions to eradicate racism, violence and hatred in sport and society,” the club said.
