Barcelona’s 2-1 loss to Girona left fans furious. The team struggled to find a rhythm both in attack and defence, with supporters singling out striker Ferran Torres and insisting he should not be on the pitch.
This game reflected Barcelona’s recent struggles, as they dominated the ball and created numerous chances, but were unable to convert. Their once admired tiki-taka style no longer makes opponents nervous.
After a quiet first half, Pau Cubers put Barra ahead in the 59th minute. However, Thomas Lemar equalized in the 62nd minute, and Fran Bertolne’s goal in the 86th minute sealed Girona’s victory.
After the defeat, coach Hansi Flick admitted:
We were very bad, especially defensively. Girona deserved to win.
Fans wholeheartedly agreed.
Torres becomes the scapegoat
Supporters blamed Torres for Barcelona’s lack of attacking depth. Social media was flooded with harsh criticism.
“Ferran Torres is not a football player” “Ferran Torres is useless. Sell him as soon as possible! Everything went wrong when Flick put him ahead of Lewandowski” “What the hell is Ferran Torres doing? #SeriousQuestion??” “Ferran Torres shouldn’t play for Barcelona”
Torres was disappointed, but goalkeeper Joao Garcia emphasized that the loss was a collective failure.
Garcia’s honest review
In his post-match interview, Garcia pointed out that an encore foul on Jules Kounde led to Girona’s second goal.
Still, he highlighted widespread defensive issues, saying: “We’re conceding too many chances. If we keep conceding too easily, my saves are worthless.”
Garcia frankly concluded, “There were a lot of guys up front. We should have cut the attack before they got that far forward. They were easily getting through our defense.”
