Javier Aguirre in trouble: How many Mexican players will miss the 2026 World Cup?

TThere are just over 100 days left until the whole world comes to a halt in the heat and passion of soccer. The 2026 World Cup, co-hosted by the United States, Mexico and Canada, is about to begin, fueling the excitement of millions of fans waiting to see what the fate of their national teams will be.

In this scenario, the Mexican national team, coached by Javier Aguirre, has the historic responsibility of being the protagonist of the opening match against South Africa at the Azteca Stadium, a match that marks the start of the world’s most anticipated tournament. However, the hopes of Mexican fans have been overshadowed by the current situation of some of the country’s best players, who have been injured in recent months and are at risk of not making the final list for the tournament.

Mexican national team: list of the most important injured Mexican players

The Mexican national soccer team is in a bit of a crisis months before the World Cup, with at least 10 players that coach Javier Aguirre considered included in the final World Cup squad suffering from illnesses of varying severity or conditions that could jeopardize their presence at the World Cup. Some of these players are:

The Russian Premier League side Dynamo Moscow’s defensive midfielder tore ligaments in his right knee during training for the 2025 Gold Cup, but is gradually returning to the pitch.

The 22-year-old FC Copenhagen full-back suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament during a Champions League match in October 2025. Due to the injury, he is likely to return in April this year, but his place in the World Cup is in serious doubt.

The two-time Mexican soccer champion has undergone arthroscopic knee surgery and will be out of action until the end of February or March, complicating his call-up for friendlies.

The Mexican national team captain has suffered a recurrence of his ankle injury and it is suspected that he will need surgery to relieve discomfort, leaving his call-up to the Mexican national team highly uncertain.

The AC Milan striker underwent surgery in December 2025 for a bruised right ankle and could return at the end of February after several months of recovery, and is keen to improve his form as soon as possible in preparation for Javier Aguirre’s World Cup call-up.

The Mexican national team, unlike other top teams in the world, does not have a large number of international stars. Injuries to their best players are therefore a matter of concern for both fans and the host nation’s leaders, who hope their star players can recover and compete in the 2026 World Cup.
