5 years since establishment
The idea for Super League was born five years ago. On April 19, 2021, the news exclusively released by MARCA became official. Real Madrid, Barcelona, Atlético, Milan, Arsenal, Chelsea, Inter, Juve, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United and Tottenham have signed up as founding clubs for the new competition, which is intended to be an alternative to the Champions League. Florentino Pérez was appointed as the first president of the Super League.
A statement announcing the launch of Super League that day read: “Twelve of Europe’s leading football clubs today announce that they have agreed to establish Super League, a new midweek competition managed by the founding clubs.”
The founding clubs included AC Milan, Arsenal FC, Atletico Madrid, Chelsea FC, FC Barcelona, FC Internazionale Milano, Juventus FC, Liverpool FC, Manchester City, Manchester United, Real Madrid CF and Tottenham Hotspur. Three other clubs will be invited to join before the first season begins.
Looking to the future, the founding clubs wish to consult with UEFA and FIFA to find the best solution for Super League and world football as a whole.
