Marc Anthony has made it clear that he currently wants to distance himself from the controversy surrounding the Beckham family, even though his name remains linked to one of the most painful events that divided the family in public.
Speaking for the first time since being mentioned in Brooklyn Beckham’s explosive statement last month, the Grammy-winning artist pushed back against the way events were portrayed, claiming that the narrative unfolding in public does not reflect reality.
“I have nothing to say about what’s going on with my family,” Anthony, 57, said in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. “They’re a great, great family. I’ve known them since before the kids were born. I’m Cruise’s godfather. I’m really close to the family.”
Although Anthony did not address specific allegations, his dissatisfaction with the story was unmistakable.
“But I have no say in what happened there,” he added. “The way things have unfolded is very unfortunate, but there is very little truth to it.”
The singer found himself embroiled in controversy after Brooklyn Beckham publicly accused his parents of overstepping boundaries at his wedding to Nicola Peltz Beckham in April 2022, and Anthony also performed at the event.
The ceremony, long remembered as a lavish celebrity ceremony, later became the focus of Brooklyn’s decision to sever ties with his family.
In a Jan. 21 statement shared on her Instagram Stories, Brooklyn said the wedding was more of a moment of humiliation than celebration. He accused his mother Victoria Beckham of sabotaging his first dance with his wife.
“My mom hijacked my first dance with my wife, which had been planned for weeks to a romantic love song,” Brooklyn wrote.
“Marc Anthony called me on stage in front of 500 wedding guests. The plan was to have a romantic dance with my wife, but instead he waited for my mother to dance with me. My mother danced on me very inappropriately in front of everyone. I have never felt so uncomfortable or humiliated in my entire life.”
“We wanted to renew our vows to create new wedding memories that would bring joy and happiness, rather than anxiety and embarrassment.”
The wedding moment becomes a flashpoint for family breakdown.
Further insight into this controversial moment was revealed in late January when wedding DJ Fat Tony appeared on Britain’s This Morning show.
While denying the exaggerated rumors, Tony admitted that the series of events caused visible discomfort.
“There were no girl-dropping scenes, no black PVC catsuits, no Spice Girl action,” Tony said. “The reason why it was inappropriate was because of the timing.”
According to Tony, Anthony was halfway through his performance when Brooklyn was called on stage, at a moment when guests were expecting Nicola to join them for the couple’s first dance.
“Marc Anthony was performing on stage. Then he called Brooklyn on stage and[Brooklyn]was expecting Nicola to come up and have the first dance. Then Marc Anthony asked ‘the most beautiful woman there’ to come on stage, and he said ‘Victoria,'” Tony explained.
DJ said the emotional impact was immediate.
“Brooklyn looked ‘devastated’,” Tony claimed, while Nicola, 31, left the venue “with tears in her eyes”.
“Brooklyn is stuck on stage and she does this dance,” Tony continued. “Marc Anthony was like, ‘Put your hand on your mother’s hip,’ and it was a Latin thing. The whole situation was really awkward for everyone there.”
