Atltico Madrid and the Seattle Sounders have reached an agreement for the transfer of Obed Vargas, with the midfielder committing his future to the Spanish club until June 30, 2030.
Seattle bids farewell to a sparkling Mexican gem at Atlótico de Madrid
The move brings one of Major League Soccer’s most established young players to Europe for the first time, marking an important step in Vargas’ career and another example of MLS talent making the leap to Europe’s top league.
Vargas was born on August 5, 2005 in Anchorage, Alaska, and later became a naturalized Mexican citizen. He progressed through the Seattle Sounders’ academy system and also featured prominently with Tacoma Defiance before breaking into the first team at an early age. He made his MLS debut on July 23, 2021, becoming the third-youngest player in league history to play a game.
Vargas became a bright star.
Since that debut, Vargas has developed into one of the league’s most reliable and versatile midfielders. He leaves Seattle with eight goals and 11 assists in 158 appearances across all competitions while playing a key role in the Sounders’ success both domestically and internationally. During the 2021-22 season, Vargas helped Seattle win the CONCACAF Champions League and added the League Cup to his list of honors in 2025.
On the international stage, Vargas made his debut for Mexico on October 15, 2024, in a friendly match against the United States at the Estadio Akron in Guadalajara. His consistent performances for the club have seen him recognized as part of Mexico’s emerging generation despite being born in the United States. The move to Atltico Madrid will be Vargas’ first professional experience in Europe, and will see him under the tutelage of one of La Liga’s most competitive clubs.
He is no stranger to Atltico, having previously played against the Spanish team at the inaugural FIFA Club World Cup in the United States. Vargas has now arrived in Madrid as a long-term investment, with Atlótico securing him until the end of the 2029-30 season as he aims to continue his development on one of football’s biggest stages.
