TThe Copa Libertadores is one of the most prestigious tournaments in the world of football, where the best clubs and Conmebols take part to vie for the highest crown across the region. This is exactly where Lionel Messi and Inter Miami aim to take part in what many consider to be the greatest tournament in the Americas.
In recent days, it has become more likely that the MLS and Liga MX champions will be able to play in this prestigious tournament.
MLS and Inter Miami want Messi to play in Copa Libertadores
Inter Miami owner Jorge Mas has expressed his excitement about the possibility of his team competing in the Copa Libertadores in the near future and is in talks to achieve this and thereby see Lionel Messi play in Conmebol’s most important competition.
Adding slots to MLS and MX would make the competition bigger and more attractive
Additionally, the Inter Miami owner explained that both MLS and Liga MX deserve these positions.
“I’ve said publicly that I want to play in the Copa Libertadores, but I think the MLS and Liga MX champions probably deserve to play.”
Before the Argentine star arrived at the MLS club, Liga MX wanted in every possible way to be able to play in the Copa Libertadores in order to maintain a good competition level. However, they faced many restrictions from Concacaf, a federation that considered the possibility of a Mexican League team competing in the Conmebol tournament unfeasible (at least at the time).
Conmebol president analyzes that Mexico and the United States will play in the Copa Libertadores
Conmebol’s current president Alejandro Dominguez told Globo Esporte that the possibility of MLS and Liga MX teams participating in the Copa Libertadores is being analyzed. However, the president stressed that Concacaf’s approval is needed for this to become a reality.
“This is a topic that should be discussed within Concacaf. We have great respect for other federations, as has been done in the past. But certainly, it is an honor for teams from other federations to have Libertadores as a reference for international and world competitions.”
The next edition of the Libertadores is not scheduled to feature teams from MLS or Liga MX, but if Lionel Messi remains at Inter Miami and Conmebol and Concaf reach an agreement, teams from the United States and Mexico could compete in the tournament in the coming years.
