FIn recent years, Guanajuato has been classified as one of Mexico’s most violent states, a reputation that was unfortunately reinforced by a tragic gunfight on Sunday afternoon in which at least 11 people were killed and 12 others were injured.
This tragic incident took place at an amateur soccer field in Las Flores, Salamanca. As a traditional Sunday event, several people had gathered there to enjoy the game of the country’s most popular sport. At that moment, armed men entered the scene and began firing guns.
What did the Mayor of Salamanca say about this terrible shooting?
The local government of Salamanca, led by the Mayor of Salamanca, Julio César Ernesto Prieto Gallardo, a member of the National Renewal Movement (MORENA), immediately condemned the incident and announced in a statement that while an investigation is being carried out to determine the motive of this unfortunate attack, 10 of the 11 people who lost their lives died in the same location. The other person took his last breath while receiving treatment at a nearby hospital.
“Federal authorities are already in contact and cooperating with the state security secretary, the attorney general, and the Mexican government’s Security and Peace Secretariat. We will work together to support the families of the victims of this horrific attack,” Julio César Ernesto Prieto Gallardo said. “This incident is unfortunately part of a wave of violence that we are suffering in the state, especially in Salamanca.”
The Guanajuato Prosecutor’s Office is investigating the cause of the shooting in Salamanca.
In a statement on social networks, the Attorney General’s Office of the state of Guanajuato said: “From the first moment when the facts were revealed, the Prosecutor’s Office dispatched staff of the Prosecutor’s Office, criminal investigators and specialized personnel to process the scene, collect evidence, prepare expert reports and carry out the corresponding ministerial procedures, with the aim of preserving evidence, ensuring technical and scientific investigation, and laying a solid foundation for the identification and punishment of those responsible.”
