At the age of 40, Guillermo Ochoa is playing as the third goalkeeper for Mexico’s 2026 World Cup team, aiming for its sixth appearance in the FIFA tournament.
Coach Javier Aguirre trusts Luis Malagon and Raul Tara Rangel to be his starting two for the World Cup, meaning the third spot will remain open until just a few months before the start of the season on June 11.
Memo Ochoa and Carlos Acevedo are in dispute
Memo Ochoa hasn’t played in a World Cup since Germany in 2006, but he didn’t get any playing time in his first World Cup and in South Africa in 2010, but that’s where he’s sticking.
Mexico will face Liga MX players away in Bolivia this Sunday, and although the AEL Limassol goalkeeper was not called up as it is not a FIFA day, the game at the Ramon “Tauichi” Aguilera Costas Stadium could be fundamental for Paco Memo’s World Cup ambitions.
According to FOX’s Juan Carlos Ibarran, it is clear that coach Vasco Aguirre will support Ochoa if Carlos Acevedo does not play in this game.
We should welcome Guillermo Ochoa, because if Acevedo is not given playing time, he is effectively bidding farewell to his chances at the World Cup.
“He made it clear in all his press conferences that he has two goalkeepers who are a step ahead in Tara Rangel and Luis Ángel Malagon. And the third goalkeeper will obviously be Guillermo Ochoa. It’s not just a matter of leadership, but because he aims to become a historic player who has played in six World Cups,” said the El Tri reporter.
