TLionel Messi’s future for the rest of his career seems already mapped out. The Argentine striker recently renewed his contract with Inter Miami, but everything points to this being the last club of his successful career. However, nothing is 100% concrete in football and despite the fact that number 10 is comfortable in Miami, the Argentine is still excited to welcome him to the club where it all started.
Messi started his career in the Newell’s Old Boys youth system and since leaving for Barcelona as a child, the Rosario club have always dreamed of bringing him back. After the coach’s comments, expectations for his return rose again.

Newell’s still dreams of Lionel Messi’s return
It seems impossible to see Messi playing in the Argentine league. The Inter Miami player has never spoken about his return to the club where it all started, but he has always had love and respect for Newell’s Old Boys and since Rosario they have not stopped believing in miracles.
A new cycle will begin at Newell’s at the beginning of 2026, with the coaching duo Favio Orsi and Sergio Gomez at the helm. As for their desire to welcome Messi in the not-too-distant future, both players expressed their desire to be able to coach him.
“Everyone at Newell’s, including us, believes it would be great for him to have the opportunity to play for his club and his city. It would be a dream not only for our fans, but for the entire country,” the coaching duo explained in a chat with ESPN.
Newell’s presidential candidate leaves pressure to Messi
In addition to the coaching staff’s statement, club president candidate Guillermo Muñoz also spoke out about Messi’s possible arrival, forcing him to decide whether or not to return.
“First of all we have to see if Messi wants a connection with Newell’s. Maybe I really want Messi to come, but it’s not enough to say ‘someday, someday’. When I look at Messi, tears come to my eyes. But that doesn’t mean he’s above the club at all,” Muñoz explained to TNT Sports.
Messi’s arrival into Argentine football may not be easy, but in a soccer-rich country, fans always believe in the impossible, and seeing the best in their home league would be the best ending for the 2022 World Cup champion.
