TPreparations are underway for the 2026 World Cup, with Mexico continuing to promote the tournament as co-hosts along with the United States and Canada. It will be a historic event, involving the best national teams and the best soccer players on the planet. 13 The matches bring in a lot of revenue for the country and are a great opportunity for tourists to get to know every corner of the country, its customs, monuments and, of course, gastronomy.
Mexican Tourism Secretary Josefina Rodríguez Zamora led the Mexican delegation at the Tourism and Investment Forum in Madrid, an event organized by BBVA. “This is the third time that Mexico has hosted the World Cup, and the fourth time that Mexico City has hosted the World Cup. We forget that the Women’s World Cup was also held in 1971, which is important,” she recalled.

“It is estimated that there will be over 5 million travelers to watch the games, but that is not a big challenge. The challenge is that these 5 million+ visitors will travel all over the country and once they arrive at the venue they will want to visit Oaxaca, Merida , you’re going to want to go back to Los Cabos, Colima, Chiapas, and you’re going to want to get to know all of Mexico. That’s why we have 32 states participating in the World Cup, not just three venues. 32. We have 13 games to play, and most importantly, we have connections with all the cities that will host the World Cup in the United States and Canada, and the most beautiful thing, a country that is waiting for them with open arms,” he said proudly.
World Cup predictions are very positive
“The numbers we have regarding the World Cup are a 48% increase in spending, a 44% increase in tourists, job creation, and it is estimated that 49% of the spending will go to hotels and restaurants. I want to encourage you to get to know our country and invest in this country. We have all the tools, but most of all today we have great work and synergy with the state, federal and local governments. Thank you for everything,” Rodríguez Zamora concluded.
BBVA organized this tourism and investment forum at the Salamanca Palace in Madrid, with the participation of the Mexican Ministry of Tourism (SECTUR) and the governors of the states of Guanajuato, Jalisco and Quintana Roo, in front of more than 300 businessmen, highlighting the country’s wealth as an investment destination and what the World Cup, which starts on June 11, means economically.
Jaime Sáenz de Tejada, BBVA’s Global Head of Corporate and Institutional Banking, also spoke at the event, highlighting Mexico’s leading bank’s drive to transform investment and tourism.
