TThe 2026 World Cup faces a new layer of uncertainty after US President Donald Trump’s administration announced a complete suspension of visa application processing for applicants from dozens of countries, a move that has caused concern among fans and tournament organizers alike.
Officials have stressed that the policy targets immigration, not tourism, but the overlap with multiple competing countries has caused confusion at a critical time in the plan.
An internal State Department memo distributed this week directed U.S. consulates to suspend processing visas for applicants from 75 countries while review standards and standards are reevaluated.
Fifteen of these countries will be represented in the tournament to be held in the United States, Mexico, and Canada. This includes world powerhouses such as Brazil and Uruguay, as well as Morocco, Senegal, and Colombia.
State Department spokesman Tommy Piggott said the department relies on existing authority to deny applications from individuals deemed likely to be dependent on public assistance.
“The State Department will use its longstanding authority to disqualify immigrants who pose a public rebuke to the United States and who could exploit the generosity of the American people,” Piggott said.
He added that immigration procedures from affected countries will be suspended while procedures are re-evaluated.
What the policy actually covers and why confusion remains
The suspension is scheduled to begin on January 21st and is said to be indefinite. Officials said limited exceptions may be granted, but did not specify specific criteria. Importantly, the suspension applies to immigrant visas for long-term stay and employment.
Nonimmigrant visas, such as tourist and student travel documents, are not included, so fans traveling temporarily for games should technically be eligible to enter the country.
However, this difference does not completely eliminate concerns. Processing delays, inconsistent interpretation at consulates and a lack of official guidance have left many donors uncertain about timelines, especially those in countries already facing long waiting periods.
The list of countries affected by the World Cup includes Brazil, Morocco, Haiti, Algeria, Cape Verde, Colombia, Ivory Coast, Egypt, Ghana, Iran, Jordan, Senegal, Tunisia, Uruguay and Uzbekistan.
The impact could be particularly pronounced in Scotland’s Group C, where three of the four teams – Brazil, Morocco and Haiti – are subject to the policy. Group matches scheduled for Foxboro and Miami could see reduced road support if delays continue.
The visa freeze comes amid a broader immigration crackdown by the Trump administration since returning to power.
In recent months, the White House has emphasized strict enforcement of “public charge” rules and extensive vetting measures. Geopolitical tensions, including the situation with Iran, have also shaped the administration’s stance on border and visa controls.
FIFA has yet to issue a formal statement on how the policy will affect fan access, but organizers are expected to seek clarification from US officials.
With millions of international visitors expected to attend the tournament, even limited uncertainty has logistical and economic implications for host cities and event planners.
While the tournament itself has not been affected so far, the episode highlights how quickly political decisions can impact global sport.
As fans finalize their travel plans and organizers fine-tune operations, clarity from authorities will be essential if the World Cup remains as accessible as audiences around the world expect.
