San Jose Earthquakes considering signing Timo Werner
Timo Werner, a 29-year-old striker who currently plays for Bundesliga side RB Leipzig, is reportedly close to signing with the San Jose Earthquakes, according to a reporter from The Athletic.
The striker is reportedly very keen on a move to an MLS club, hoping to rediscover the form that took him to the world elite a few years ago and even be named part of the national team as a starter at one point.
Timo Werner’s story: from star to forgotten
The striker started his career with Stuttgart in the Bundesliga at just 17 years old, where he quickly distinguished himself with goals and was quickly moved to another club. After signing for RB Leipzig in the 2016-17 season, he showed an excellent level of performance, establishing himself as a starter and attracting attention from Europe’s biggest clubs. In the end, Premier League side Chelsea paid $53 million to sign the player for the 2020-21 season.
At the Blues, the German striker had up-and-down performances and was never able to establish himself as an undisputed starter, but it was with this club that he achieved the biggest feat of his career, winning the UEFA Champions League by defeating Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City in the 2021 final, where he replaced American Christian Pulisic as a starter.
After winning the Champions League in 2022, he returned to Leipzig, but was unable to regain his form there and was loaned to Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur for two seasons, where the German won Spurs’ first title, the UEFA Europa League.
Ahead of the 2025-26 season, he has left the German club and is currently looking for new opportunities with the possibility of signing with MLS. Werner has come into his own with his excellent scoring instincts and ability to get in front of goal, but unfortunately he has not been able to make a difference on the pitch in recent years and he would like to change that.
