Michael Carrick beats Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to be appointed Manchester United manager until the end of the season after convincing intervention from senior players
Manchester United have named Michael Carrick as interim manager after some of their senior stars rejected Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s return.
Carrick will remain in charge until the end of the season, marking his second time in charge. Solskjaer is considered the favorite to replace the sacked Ruben Amorim and has been interviewed twice for the role.
However, he was left out after some players went to the club’s leadership and told them they did not want Solskjær back. The players have little faith in Solskjaer and are believed to have made it clear they want Carrick to be in charge for the remainder of the season.
United legend Solskjaer was in charge of the club from 2018 to 2021, but was sacked after winning 54% of his 168 games.

Carrick’s appointment is expected to be approved within the next 24 hours following a process led by CEO Omar Berada and Director of Football Jason Wilcox. The 44-year-old is expected to have his first training session on Wednesday ahead of this weekend’s first game, when United face a tense showdown with neighbors Manchester City at Old Trafford.
This game will be a baptism of fire for Carrick, as United have won just one of their last seven games in all competitions. Carrick served as caretaker manager for three games following Solskjær’s sacking.
He recorded two wins and one draw before leaving after Ralf Rangnick took over as interim manager. He has been out of work since being sacked by Championship club Middlesbrough in June.

Carrick led Boro to the Championship play-offs in 2022-23, but they lost to Coventry in the semi-final. His team then narrowly missed out on finishing in the top six in successive campaigns, resulting in Carrick losing his job.
The former England midfielder made 464 appearances for United, winning 18 major trophies including the 2008 Champions League title. After retiring at the end of the 2017-18 season, he joined United manager Jose Mourinho’s coaching staff.
And even after Mourinho was sacked, Carrick remained as first-team coach throughout Solskjaer’s 168-game reign.
Darren Fletcher has been in charge of United in the last two games since Amorim was sacked. The under-18s manager oversaw a 2-2 draw with Burnley in the Premier League before Sunday’s 2-1 defeat at Brighton in the FA Cup third round.
