Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk lamented “sloppy, predictable and bad decision-making” as Wolves’ dramatic late defeat damaged Champions League hopes

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk slammed his side’s performance in Tuesday’s 2-1 defeat at Wolves as “slow, predictable and sloppy”.
Andre scored from deep in stoppage time to hand the Premier League underground side a dramatic victory. The team followed up last Friday’s win against Aston Villa with another impressive display, in keeping with the resilience they have shown in recent weeks.

The decisive moment came four minutes into stoppage time when Wolves’ Brazilian midfielder scored his first goal of the season after a deflection, ending Liverpool’s hopes of qualifying for the Champions League.

Far from being the tentative side they once seemed to be on the decline, Wolves have rediscovered their faith in front of their supporters. Rodrigo Gomez took control with his first shot of the night.

Mohamed Salah lifted Liverpool’s level by ending a 122-day, 10-game drought, but it was only a temporary reprieve as Arne Slott was left to rue missed opportunities and reflect on his ninth league defeat. The teams will meet again in the Emirates FA Cup fifth round on Friday, which will be streamed live on TNT Sports and Discovery Plus.

“I think it was our fault. We were slow, we were predictable, we had sloppy possession and we made bad decisions,” Van Dijk told TNT Sports.

“We didn’t give up the chance, but with a performance like that, a result like this could have happened, and that’s true. It was disappointing.”

Asked why Liverpool have been slow to start, the Dutchman added: “That’s not one of the reasons. In recent games, we’ve been over-analyzing why what’s happening on the pitch.”

“We want to start the game as well as we can as a team and in the last game we had the majority of the ball today, but we still made bad decisions and couldn’t find the final product.

“It’s always frustrating to concede goals. We’ve had a few clean sheets and been very solid defensively, but that’s the way it is and we have to move on quickly because we’re back here in a few days and we want to do well in the FA Cup.”

Van Dijk felt substitute Tolu Alokodare may have fouled him in the build-up to Wolves’ opening game, adding: “There has been a lot of speculation in recent weeks about whether certain fouls were or were not awarded.

“The referee didn’t approve of it. That’s the reality and we have to deal with it. 2-1 is a big deflection when they scored. It shouldn’t have come that far but it happened. It happened for them last week against Villa too.”

“The whole season will not be easy. It will always be a season of ups and downs for multiple reasons. The league is strong, the league is demanding and every three or four days there will be big battles. We need everyone to give their best and we need a big team.”

“We need results. It says there’s still work to do, but it’s very clear and what we need to focus on.”

Gerrard: Slots should start Ngmoha

Gerrard disagreed with Van Dijk on the legitimacy of Wolves’ opening goal and believed there had been no foul before Gomez’s lofted finish.

Gerrard told TNT Sports: “Liverpool will be grasping at straws if they want to call for a foul (for Wolves’ winning goal).” “Wolves brought a big, physical presence so we need to be ready for that.

“He has to get back up and be stronger. If you look back at the game, he will be disappointed in that. He was hoping (Ibrahima) Konate would bail him out.”

“Liverpool were desperate and really poor for 65 minutes tonight. They didn’t produce enough, they didn’t play with the right speed or the right tempo.

“They didn’t have enough quality. He (Slot) now has to start (Rio) Ngmoja. He’s coming in now and doing more in a short cameo and short minutes than (Cody) Gakpo does in 65-70 minutes.”

“He deserves to start now and we have to start this kid on Friday night. Wolves looked very comfortable. The first half was completely wasted for Liverpool. They couldn’t do anything, there was no urgency, there was no change in ball speed at the top end of the pitch. And they have to stop conceding really bad goals.”

“(For the first goal) it was a basic ball to the target man, but for the second goal there was no response. If we want to advance in the FA Cup, we need to defend better. Tonight they missed a big chance.”

The result means Wolves have won back-to-back Premier League games for the first time since April, leaving Liverpool behind in the race for next season’s Champions League qualification.

According to Opta, Andre’s decisive strike for Wolves marks the first time a relegation-placed team has scored the winning goal in the 90th minute against the reigning Premier League champions.

Slott hasn’t been able to score this season, as he tends to concede late in the game.

Liverpool have lost five games in the Premier League this season due to stoppage-time goals, the most in a single season in the competition’s history.

Slott told TNT Sports: “The first half was far from good, it was a bad result. The second half was a little bit more tense, we got closer and closer to goal, and then we conceded at the first moment they were near our box. We fought back right away and came close to winning twice, first on the post, then on Mo, and then twice.”

“In the end, the shot that didn’t even turn into a chance was deflected.

“We conceded few chances and created more than they created, but we lost 2-1 again.

“We’ve lost too many football games, we’ve given up points, and we’re giving up points in overtime again? The three times we’ve lost in the last 22 games have all been in overtime.”

McCoist: Molineux has become a difficult place.

Wolves, who host Liverpool again in the Emirates FA Cup on Friday (live on TNT Sports and Discovery Plus), remain bottom of the Premier League but have picked up four points from their last two home games.

A stunning comeback from a 2-2 draw with Arsenal and a 2-0 win over Aston Villa breathed life into Rob Edwards’ tenure.

TNT Sports commentator Ally McCoist reflected, “It’s pretty remarkable, it really is. You look around here and they’re having a really, really tough season, but they’re playing for each other and they’re playing for the fans.”

“Look at what Wolves did against Arsenal. Yes, Molineux has been a difficult place to come to in recent weeks. They defended very well and took their chances when they came. It was a great night for them.”
