Wolves 2-1 Liverpool: The reigning Premier League champions failed to show their dominance with a poor result against Rob Edwards’ resolute side at Molineux
In a night that Arne Slott and Co. will hurry to forget, Wolves scored in the 94th minute to inflict Liverpool’s most painful defeat of the season in stunning fashion.
The boring first half lacked entertainment, but it passed without any notable incidents. But thankfully both teams found their cutting edge and the game exploded into action during a mesmerizing final 15 minutes.
The home side’s resolute defending kept Liverpool at bay, but Gomez made a mistake in the 78th minute, with Matheus Mane bringing on Gomez to give Wolves the chance to complete a memorable smash and grab. Unfortunately for Rob Edwards’ men, Liverpool appeared to be saved when Mohamed Salah scored – his first in the Premier League since November – just five minutes later.
But it turned out to be just a warm-up for Andre, who sparked scenes at Molineux in the fourth minute of stoppage time when his deflected shot looped over the stranded Alisson. Introducing key points from important mirror football games…

1) Liverpool destroys golden chance
You don’t need me or anyone else to tell you that this was a golden opportunity for Liverpool to quickly get back into the Champions League. However, they could not beat a Wolves team that had lost 20 of 29 league games by Tuesday night.
After a sluggish first 45 minutes, the champions thankfully improved, but it wasn’t enough. And if we’re going to finish in the top four, we can’t afford to lose a match like this.
2) Reds overall problem
Salah’s struggles have been highlighted in many places this term, but from a numbers perspective, Kodi Gakpo has similarly been impressive. His goal in the 5-2 win over West Ham at the weekend was his first since early January, but like Salah, he was ineffective at Molineux.
The flamboyant Salah and Luis Diaz were first choice on the left wing of Liverpool’s front three, and the duo amassed an astonishing 67 goals in the Premier League, propelling the Reds on their way to Premier League glory. The decline in this area this year is noticeable, with Gakpo and Salah scoring just 19 points (Salah’s late goal here giving him 20), although he is mindful that there are still games left.
But it’s not just about contributing goals. Even if Salah does find the back of the net in a league game for the first time since early November, they will not be able to influence games in the same way as Liverpool’s wide man last year, which will be a major concern for Slott and Co.
3) Gomez shines on the big stage
Wolves may not be playing in the Premier League next season, but the classy Joao Gomez has highlighted why he is certain they will. Sharing the pitch with Dominik Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister, Gomes didn’t look out of place and was at the center of everything Wolves did during a strong first half, attacking when needed.
If recent reports are to be believed, Gomez will have no shortage of suitors in the summer transfer window. And for any top Premier League club looking to revamp their engine room, Gomez should be at the top of the list.
4) Wolves show fight
Even the most optimistic Wolves fan will admit there is no great escape for Rob Edwards’ side, given they started the night half a point behind Nottingham Forest, who sit just outside the relegation zone.
But in recent weeks, at least, they have shown a fight against their fate. They were good running and good defensively here, but were almost non-existent as an attacking threat until the late goal.
The Wolves have now won consecutive games and are finally starting to regain their energy. The only shame is that this newfound steel will almost certainly be too late to save them.
5) Matches that don’t deserve a grandstand finish
There wasn’t much to shout about for either team during the 80 minutes of Tuesday night’s game, but the Wolves will be happy with their defensive effort.
However, Gomez’s goal suddenly came as a shock to his life. Salah scored minutes later to complete a frenetic finale and score his first Premier League goal since November. And then there was Andre’s grandstand finish, with the manager unleashing his best Jose Mourinho impression midway through the touchline.
It was a very welcome finale, although the game didn’t quite justify it. Liverpool will have to lick their wounds. And while Wolves will almost certainly have to take a pill in the form of relegation in the coming weeks, the memories of this night will likely outlast the pain.
