English football legend and two-time Ballon d’Or winner Kevin Keegan has cancer and will need surgery.
The former player’s family revealed that doctors discovered the cancer during tests at hospital for “abdominal symptoms” and that Keegan would need to undergo surgery.
Aston Villa fans were shocked by Dave Martinez’s unexpected performance.
“Kevin is extremely grateful for the intervention and treatment of his medical team. During this difficult time, the family requests privacy and will not be commenting further on this matter.”
During a career that began at Scunthorpe United in 1968, Keegan made 230 appearances for Liverpool, scoring 68 goals and winning three league titles, one European Cup and two UEFA Cups.
After seven years at Anfield, Keegan went on to play for Hamburg, Southampton and Newcastle United before retiring at Blacktown City.
In Hamburg they won the Bundesliga and reached the European Cup final. The British player won the Ballon d’Or twice, in 1978 and 1979. As a coach, he oversaw Newcastle, and in 1993 they won the Premier League, Fulham, Manchester City and, briefly, England.
