Real Madrid and Brazil legend Roberto Carlos underwent surgery at a hospital in São Paulo (Brazil) after medical tests revealed he had a heart problem. Initial reports said the 52-year-old former soccer player was out of danger and would be kept under observation for several more hours as a precaution.
The initial reason for his visit to the hospital had nothing to do with his heart. As part of a routine medical checkup, Roberto Carlos underwent tests after a blood clot was detected in one of his legs. After performing an MRI and supplementary tests, doctors discovered that a significant portion of his heart was not functioning properly and decided on immediate surgery.
The surgery was originally scheduled to last about 40 minutes, but was extended to nearly three hours after complications arose during the procedure to implant a catheter to correct a heart problem. Despite this, the procedure was completed successfully and the former player remains in a stable condition in the ward under observation.
Pending new medical reports, the Brazilian’s entourage remained calm, admitting it was just fear, but doctors decided to keep him under observation for at least 48 hours to ensure his evolution was on track and no complications occurred.
