Cristiano Ronaldo leaves the Globe Soccer Awards in Dubai. He had more than just a trophy in his hands.

The 40-year-old hinted that his football journey may not be limited to the Saudi Professional League, opening the door to a possible return to European competition as he continues his unprecedented pursuit of 1,000 career goals.

Ronaldo scored two decisive goals in Al Nasr’s 30th win against Al Ahdoud on Saturday, taking his career tally to 956 and showing the world that he is one of the sport’s most prolific finishers even at the end of his career.

The victory also marks Al Nasr’s record 10th consecutive win in the Saudi Professional League, and they currently sit comfortably at the top of the domestic rankings.

At Sunday’s awards ceremony, Ronaldo reiterated his long-held ambition to keep playing and reach the four-figure scoring record never before officially achieved by a male player.

In recognition of his contribution, he was awarded the Best Middle East Player of the Year, an accolade he has won several times in recent years.

When asked about his plans for the future, Ronaldo clarified that his motivation has not diminished as he grows older.

“My passion is high and I want to continue. It doesn’t matter where I play, whether it’s in the Middle East or Europe,” Ronaldo said, hinting that he would consider a return to the European leagues if the right opportunity presented itself.

“I always enjoy playing soccer, and I want to continue playing soccer.”

That tenacity doesn’t just mean Ronaldo’s longevity. It’s also about following history.

“If I don’t get injured, I’m sure I’ll reach that number (1,000 goals),” he said, repeating his long-held goal of achieving 1,000 goals for both club and country.

Long life and legendary output

Ronaldo’s consistency over 20 years puts him in one category when it comes to scoring.

With his two goals against Al Ahdud that night, he increased his total score to 956, including 40 goals scored in 2025 alone, and continues to produce elite players even in this era when most professional players have long since retired.

His record includes goals for Portugal, who are expected to feature in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, and for the club team, for which he has been decisive.

Even now, approaching 41, Ronaldo remains in remarkable physical condition, a testament to the regimen and discipline that has characterized his career.

Off the field, Ronaldo’s rigorous fitness and nutritional habits are widely known and often cited as part of the reason he is able to compete at such a high level into his late 30s and early 40s.

He adheres to a strict schedule that includes Pilates, swimming, frequent gym sessions, and being very careful about his diet, recovery, and lifestyle choices. I spoke publicly in an interview.
