A player turned down Messi’s Inter Miami, choosing to play in Europe instead

Nicolas Fonseca, one of the most talked about midfielders in Liga MX this transfer window, opted not to join Lionel Messi and Inter Miami in a high-profile move to Major League Soccer.

The decision closes the door on a possible reunion with world icon Messi and signals the strategic direction being taken by both the player and his ownership group.

Lionel Messi arrives in Rosario to spend Christmas holidays at home before returning to Miami

According to a report from Super Deportivo, current MLS champions Inter Miami CF have submitted a formal offer to Club Leon for Fonseca.

However, this proposal was ultimately rejected by Club Leon’s ownership group, Grupo Pachuca.

The offer was deemed insufficient, especially given the group’s broader objective of securing a multi-million dollar transfer fee rather than agreeing to a contract that did not fully reflect the player’s valuation.

A move to Inter Miami CF could have immediately attracted attention alongside Messi, but no deal was reached and attention quickly returned to Europe.

As a result, Fonseca will be loaned to Real Oviedo, allowing him to compete in the competitive environment of La Liga and maintain a clear path to international recognition.

Leon reorganizes team following Fonseca’s departure

Nicola Fonseca’s departure will have an immediate impact on Club Leon.

His departure frees up a valuable roster spot designated as a No Formado en México (NFM) player, giving the club flexibility ahead of Clausura 2026.

The space is expected to be used to strengthen the backline, with manager Nacho Ambriz making a left-handed central defender his top priority.

This is not the first time Fonseca has come close to moving to Spain. During the previous summer’s transfer window, Club Leon had reached an agreement with Valencia CF regarding his transfer.

Despite the player having already said goodbye to his team-mates, the deal collapsed at the last moment and his European ambitions were put on hold.

Fonseca originally joined Club Leon at the Clausura 2025 from Argentina’s River Plate, joining as one of the headline signings in a project aimed at elevating the club on the world stage.

That vision included participation in the Club World Cup, a competition that Leon was ultimately excluded from due to FIFA’s multi-club ownership rules affecting Grupo Pachuca.

On the pitch, Fonseca’s first year in Mexico was more solid than spectacular. His performance was widely seen as average, largely due to the team’s struggles in Apertura 2025.

Club Leon finished second from bottom in the standings, ahead of Puebla, and opportunities for individual standouts to shine consistently were limited.

Why Fonseca chose Spain over Miami

From a player’s perspective, a move to Spain means more than just a change of scenery.

The Uruguayan midfielder sees European football, particularly in Spain, as an ideal platform to increase his exposure ahead of the 2026 World Cup.

Competition in Europe strengthens his case for national team selection and coincides with his ambition to gain consideration from Uruguay national team head coach Marcelo Bielsa.

By choosing Real Oviedo over Inter Miami CF, Nicolas Fonseca has made it clear that long-term development and international ambitions outweigh short-term attraction.

Turning down the chance to play alongside Messi is not something to be said lightly, but Europe remains the stage on which Fonseca must write his next chapter.
