Despite boasting one of the most star-studded attacking lines in world football, including eight-time Ballon d’Or winner Lionel Messi, Inter Miami’s leaders appear to understand that success in 2026 will depend on the balance of the team as a whole.
While the attacking core remains strong, defensive depth has emerged as a concern, and the club may be looking to solve this by relying on a familiar name from Messi’s international past.
It has been confirmed that Messi will remain at Herons for at least another year, along with Rodrigo de Paul and Luis Suarez. With that core secured, attention shifted to reinforcing the final line.
According to a report from TNT Sport Argentina, Inter Miami have renewed their interest in Marcos Rojo, a veteran defender with extensive experience at both club and international level.
Why Rojo fits into Inter Miami’s plans
Rojo, now 35 years old, currently plays for Racing Club in Argentina. His contract runs until June 2026, but his situation has sparked fresh speculation about a possible move to MLS.
This isn’t the first time a Florida team has explored that possibility. Back in 2023, respected journalist Gaston Edul reported that Inter Miami had already expressed interest in signing Rojo, an expression of their long-standing admiration for the defender.
The Argentine center back joined the Racing club on a free transfer in August after spending four seasons with Boca Juniors. However, his time since arriving has been limited by availability and form.
Rojo has played just eight games in all competitions in 2025, including three in La Liga, one in the Copa Argentina and four in the Copa Libertadores.
His stint at Boca also raised questions about durability. During his four years at the club, Rojo made just 13 appearances, 12 of them in La Liga and one in the Copa Libertadores.
Mascherano sets the tone with more experience than youth
From Mascherano’s perspective, Rojo’s appeal extends beyond his recent playing time.
The defender brings leadership, positional intelligence and familiarity with elite-level football from his time at Manchester United and Sporting Lisbon, qualities that align with Inter Miami’s short-term ambitions.
Importantly, Rojo shares a long-standing relationship with Messi from his time with the Argentina national team, an element that has proven valuable in the club’s recruitment strategy.
Defensive instability is one of the few weaknesses of an otherwise formidable Inter Miami team. Injuries, rotations and departures have exposed the lack of experienced coverage in central defense.
Adding an experienced national team player like Rojo could help stabilize the backline, while also allowing young players to develop without putting too much pressure on them.
