○One of the main objectives of hosting a World Cup is to provide an economic stimulus to the host country, and the 2026 tournament will be no different. That doesn’t mean it’s going to be affordable, and it never will be. See current prices for pre- and post-game hotel bookings in Mexico City.

The match between the Mexican national team and South Africa on June 11 is causing great excitement and everyone wants to watch it. But it seems like it would cost a lot of money to participate.
Prices soar in the run-up to the World Cup
According to a study published by The Athletic, hotel prices have increased by up to 961% (in some individual cases, more than 2,300%). The analysis compared room rates available three weeks before regular dates to room rates on World Cup game days and found that the average nightly rate across six hotels in Mexico City jumped from approximately $172 to $1,572.
For hotels like Le Muridien Mexico City Reforma, room rates rose from about $157 per night to $3,882 for the nights of June 10 and 11, the same period as the season opener, the report said.
The price comparison is based on a sample of hotels selected through the Marriott Bonvoy and Hilton Honors apps and covers cities in the three host countries (Mexico, United States, and Canada), with Mexico City seeing the steepest increase to date.
Therefore, as you can see from the prices of tickets, flights and accommodation, this World Cup is not for everyone. Let’s hope it’s a great celebration, even if many of us will be enjoying it from our TV screens at home.
