Lionel Messi’s craze has crossed borders in a way that few athletes in history have achieved. After a historic season in MLS that included an Eastern Conference title, MLS Cup 2025, and numerous individual awards, the Argentina captain was invited by the Indian government to preside over a memorial service and the unveiling of a monument in his honor.
This bronze statue erected in Kolkata depicts Messi being lifted up for the 2022 Qatar World Cup, and has generated overwhelming expectations. The Argentine is expected to arrive with his entourage on December 13 to preside over a ceremony that promises to be a huge celebration in one of the most football-loving countries.

India’s Lionel Messi statue will be over 20 meters tall and will stand next to Maradona
There has been much talk of a large figure, and the final statue will be made of fiberglass and will reach 21 meters in height, making it one of the largest football statues in the world. Its design depicts Messi’s most iconic moments, as well as the best moments of his career when he won the 2022 World Cup and lifted the World Cup trophy with Argentina’s national team.
The statue’s location also has special symbolism, as it is close to the statue of Diego Armando Maradona, which brings together two of the best Argentinian soccer players in the world, and two of the few soccer players to become world champions.
Lionel Messi’s India ‘GOAT Tour’: packed stadiums, parades and meeting with Narendra Modi
Lionel Messi’s plans include not only a memorial event in Kolkata but also the start of the so-called ‘GOAT Tour’ which will visit Kolkata, Hyderabad, Mumbai and New Delhi. The statue’s virtual presentation will take place at the 70,000-seat Salt Lake Stadium.
Indian media are also predicting that there will also be a behind-the-scenes recreation of the footballer’s home in Miami, the world champion’s iconic throne, a special sevens match in Hyderabad, and even a fashion show with the likes of Luis Suarez and Rodrigo de Paul.
Finally, the tour concludes with an official meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, once again reflecting on Messi’s cultural impact around the world.
