THomas Muller’s Vancouver Whitecaps are already in Miami to face Leo Messi’s Inter Miami in the MLS final. The MLS Cup winner will be decided this Saturday at Chase Stadium in Fort Lauderdale.
The Miami team defeated New York City FC 5-1 in the Eastern Conference finals to advance to the MLS finals. Meanwhile, the Canadian club defeated San Diego FC 3-1 in the Western final, booking their ticket to the biggest night in U.S.-Canadian soccer.
Thomas Muller’s threat against Leo Messi could become a reality in the MLS final
A thrilling final was set to take place between two old friends, Lionel Messi and Thomas Muller. The German handed the Argentine star two of the toughest defeats of his career. They narrowly lost the 2014 World Cup final, and Bayern Munich defeated Barcelona 8-2 in the 2019-20 Champions League quarter-finals.
Muller cheats on ‘trophy curse’
The legendary German player attended a press conference before the MLS Cup and the MLS Trophy was in attendance. Müller could not resist the urge to look at the cup up close, but he would not touch it.
“The Trophy Curse” refers to the famous curse of players who touch the trophy before the finals and lose it. You cannot touch the cup until you win on the pitch.
Cristiano Ronaldo, Zidane and Gattuso also become victims
One of the most recent to learn this lesson was Al Nasr’s Cristiano Ronaldo. CR7 ventured into the Saudi Super Cup before the finals began, and the team lost 4-1 to Al Hilal.
Other notable players who lost in the final while holding a trophy include Zinedine Zidane in the 2006 World Cup, Gennaro Gattuso in the 2005 Champions League, Iker Mouniane in the 2021 Copa del Rey and Anatoly Timoshuk in the 2012 Champions League.
