Lionel Messi shared his time at Barcelona with a coach he himself described as “unique” and “better than anyone else”.
From 2008 to 2012, the Argentine national team captain was under the guidance of manager Josep Guardiola, and together they won numerous titles, including two Champions Leagues. However, not everything was rosy and they even got into an argument, which Leo revealed why.

Leo is very attached to his family, as he has shown many times. This was not the real reason for the quarrel with the coach, but rather the number 10’s desire to go to Argentina and celebrate Christmas and New Year in his hometown of Rosario.
In an interview with ESPN, Leo revealed, “I had a ‘discussion’ with Pep, in quotes, because I didn’t want it many times or the dates didn’t work out.”
However, Messi was quick to clarify that these differences between the two sides did not prevent them from having a good relationship, and explained how it motivated him to return to his home country. “He always understood me, let me go, gave me permission,” she said.
“For me, it was a boost because I already had what I loved: to go back to Rosario, to be with my friends and family,” Leo added.
Furthermore, in the interview, the current Inter Miami captain praised Pep, stating that he has learned a lot from Pep and has greatly strengthened his game, and even revealed that Guardiola was the one who made Pep play as a false No. 9.
Meanwhile, Lionel is preparing to play in the 2025 MLS Cup Final after winning the Eastern Conference title. Inter Miami will take on Thomas Muller’s Vancouver Whitecaps on Saturday, December 6th at Chase Stadium.
