Rafinha’s resurgence at FC Barcelona is rapidly reshaping the club’s identity and Brazil’s outlook

Rafinha’s resurgence at FC Barcelona has seen the 28-year-old forward now emerge as the driving force behind the Catalan attack, rapidly reshaping both the club’s identity and Brazil’s prospects for the 2026 World Cup.

Once seen primarily as a wide player, Rafinha has evolved into Barcelona’s most influential attacking catalyst, a transformation that has seen immediate results in La Liga and is beginning to resonate at international level. Barcelona’s recent 3-1 come-from-behind victory over Atletico Madrid clearly demonstrated his growing influence.

The match was moved up due to the Spanish Super Cup schedule, and the Blaugrana found themselves at a disadvantage, but goals from Rafinha, Dani Olmo and Ferran Torres turned the game around in the closing stages. The victory extended Barcelona’s lead at the top and reinforced the sense that Hansi Flick’s side are rediscovering their authority in domestic competition.

Players with multiple positions

What makes this version of Rafinha especially important is the role he currently plays within Flick’s system. Initially placed on the right flank, his responsibilities shifted when Lamine Yamal burst onto the scene and claimed that flank as his own. Rather than alienate one of Barcelona’s most productive attackers, Flick repositioned Rafinha into a central playmaking role, working alongside the striker.

This move unlocked another dimension to his game, allowing him to combine defensive work rate with creative responsibility in the final third. This number reflects how smoothly he has adapted. In just 11 games in La Liga and the UEFA Champions League, Raphinha has already scored six goals and provided five assists for the attacking midfielder, which is comparable to any playmaker in Europe over the same period.

Flick was unabashed in his praise of the Brazilian, calling him the perfect player with the qualities to initiate the press, contribute defensively, score in tight spaces and deliver decisive passes. The players themselves were not without hesitation about this transition.

Raphinha was hesitant at first.

Raphinha admitted in a recent interview that he was initially resistant to the idea of moving from his familiar wing position to a more central role. However, over time, he has come to accept that suitability within elite clubs and elite national teams is non-negotiable, and that now looks like a turning point in his career. The results validated the decision at both a tactical and individual level.

This evolution is particularly meaningful for Brazil, which has been searching for a stable creative presence since losing its established focus with Neymar’s long-term injury absence. Vinicius Junior often played on the wing, especially during the Copa America, with central attacking responsibilities rotating between players such as Lucas Paqueta and Rodrygo, but there was no clear owner of the role.

Rafinha’s comfort in his new position at Barcelona has translated into renewed confidence in the Brazilian shirt, offering the Selecao a more natural solution in an advanced central area. He also accepted leadership demands that came with additional responsibilities, such as coordinating plays and stepping into high-pressure situations such as penalty duty. His willingness to adapt, compete for roles and put pressure on his shoulders reflects the maturity the Brazilian national team has lacked in that zone since Neymar’s absence.
