In the MLS Cup final, Inter Miami will host Thomas Muller’s Vancouver Whitecaps, who defeated San Diego FC 3-1 on Saturday. The two teams will meet at Chase Stadium on Saturday, Dec. 6, and both teams will be looking for a win, but Leo may be aiming for something more.
Carlos Valderrama shone thanks to his skill on the ball and, above all, his assists. In the 1990s and 2000s, he had 26 assists in a single MLS season with Tampa Bay, which was unprecedented.
The 38-year-old Argentine captain is following in the footsteps of ‘El Pibe’ and currently has 21 assists, leaving him five points away from catching up with the former Colombian. However, the feat may be even harder to achieve given there are only 90 minutes left until the final against the Whitecaps.
If successful, Lionel will become the second player in MLS to have 26 assists in a single season.
Additionally, if Inter Miami scores one more goal, it will surpass Toronto’s 17 points in the 2016 playoffs, while two goals would break the LA Galaxy’s record of 18 points last year.
Since joining the Florida team in July 2023, Messi has won three titles: the 2023 League Cup, the 2024 MLS Supporters’ Shield, and most recently the MLS Cup Eastern Conference title.
