WThere are only seven months left until the start of the World Cup, which will be held in the United States, Canada, and Mexico from June 11th to July 19th.
Some teams have already secured tickets, including Lionel Messi’s Argentina and Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal, sparking speculation among fans as well as players and football legends.
White House video confirms position on Messi vs. Cristiano Ronaldo ‘GOAT’ debate
The World Cup that “defines” the GOAT of soccer
The debate between the Inter Miami captain and Al Nasr star is heating up ahead of the FIFA tournament. On December 18, 2022, Messi and Argentina defeated Kylian Mbapp’s France to become champions, the country’s third World Cup victory and Leo’s first.
Although Messi’s presence is currently unconfirmed, his teammates will defend the title they have won and fight for their second championship. Meanwhile, Cristiano Ronaldo is aiming to bring home the cup for the first time in his country’s history and his career. This will be both players’ sixth appearance in the tournament, making them the only two to accomplish this feat. (Mexican goaltender Guillermo “Memo” Ochoa could also join this tally if he confirms his presence).
With this in mind, Marcos Andor Batista Santos, better known as Vampeta, has given his opinion on which of the two will be the undisputed GOAT of the sport and explained why. In a video shared by X’s @AUPFCRseven account, the former Brazil midfielder said:
“Apart from Pell, if Cristiano wins the World Cup with Portugal, he will be bigger and more important than Messi or Maradona. Do you know why? Argentina has won the World Cup before Messi, but Portugal has not. This will be their first World Cup,” said the 2002 Japan-Korea champion.
Vampeta’s words came after Cristiano himself said in an interview with Piers Morgan that he considers himself better than Lionel Messi and wants to win trophies, although for him seven matches do not define a footballer.
Meanwhile, soccer fans are currently focusing on the draw for the 2026 World Cup, which will decide the tournament groups. The ceremony will be held in Washington on Friday, December 5th.
