Preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup continue to get more intense as final qualifying rounds close around the world. With 42 countries already scheduled to take part in the expanded 48-team tournament, the remaining spots suddenly become the most valuable in world football. Four of these spots will be allocated via UEFA’s play-off route, and the final two spots will be allocated through an inter-federation play-off.
While this qualifying round previously felt like a quiet final step, the 2026 edition has transformed it into something even more attention-grabbing. This will be a compact and highly strategic tournament, scheduled to take place several months before kickoff. The six teams involved know that they only need one more win to make their dream come true, and that they are just one step away from missing out on the biggest World Cup in history.

Confirmed participants come from all corners of the football map. CONCACAF will send Jamaica and Suriname, who finished in second place, their highest finish in the group stage. Africa’s CAF is represented by the Democratic Republic of the Congo, while Bolivia flies the South American flag. Iraq from Asia and New Caledonia from Oceania round out the lineup. Only two players will survive the difficult playoffs.
A new format built for high-pressure moments
The inter-federation playoffs will be held in Mexico during the FIFA period from March 23 to March 31, 2026. The draw is scheduled for November 20 in Zurich, where the six teams will be divided into two three-team slots. Seeding is determined by the FIFA Men’s World Rankings.
The inter-confederation playoffs will follow a compact knockout-style layout designed to maximize intensity. The breakdown is as follows:

As anticipation builds for the November draw, all six teams know just how close they are to making their own football history. This tournament will serve as a test event for Mexico and the final emotional chapter of World Cup qualification. As the calendar turns to March 2026, the pressure will be greater and the stakes will be even higher.
