BBrazilian football is experiencing an unprecedented moment as Pele’s brand becomes part of NR Sport, the company run by Neymar Jr.’s father, Neymar da Silva Santos. The move is an attempt to once again compete in the market and reinvigorate the commercial legacy of the ‘King of Football’, although the brand has rarely been used since the Brazilian legend’s death in 2022.
Various local journalists have noted that the negotiations concluded quickly and without complications. Neymar’s family now controls one of the most important symbols of world football, carrying Pele’s history into modern times and after his death.
How much did Neymar pay for Pele’s brand and what does that purchase include?
A source close to NR Sports said the deal was for around $18 million, but that figure has not been officially confirmed. The agreement includes:
Official use of Pele’s name and image License for products and projects Management of historical archives and heritage related to the Brazilian player
Official announcement of the contract and tribute to Pele’s 1000th jersey number
The formal announcement of the acquisition is expected to take place on November 19, to coincide with Pelé’s 1,000th goal for the Maracanã, and sources close to the brand say they are seeking to expand the brand globally and cement Neymar and his family as influential businessmen beyond their work on the field.
The relationship between Neymar and Pele’s brand has strengthened since the Brazilian returned to Santos FC. Santos FC is the club where both players played and left their names in the team’s history. Neymar Jr bought the iconic brand while working towards the 2026 World Cup and earning a call-up from coach Carlo Ancelotti for the biggest World Cup in history, which will be held in the United States, Canada and Mexico. The latter country was conquered by Pele in 1970 when he defeated Italy 4-1 at the Estadio Azteca to become world champion.
