On Thursday, Nov. 13, MLS announced it would align its calendar with world-famous tournaments as the next step toward global integration. This new annual structure will come into effect from 2027.

New structure for MLS season
As mentioned above, the changes will take effect from the 2027-28 season. The season begins in mid-July and concludes with the Audi MLS Cup Playoffs and MLS Cup in May. The league will go on hiatus in mid-December and resume operations in February, meaning no games will be played completely in January.
To arrive at the new format, MLS will enter a transition period from February to May 2027, during which 14 games, the postseason, and MLS Cup will be held. The results of this transition competition will determine which clubs qualify for the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup, Canadian Championship, Leagues Cup and Concacaf Champions Cup.
