Traditionally, during the ceremony at Windsor Castle, Beckham kneels on his right knee and the king and other members of the royal family tap him on his right shoulder, then his left shoulder with a sword blade.
In June, when Beckham’s honor was revealed, he told PA: “Growing up in East London with parents and grandparents who were patriotic and proud of being British, I never imagined I would receive such a truly humbling honour. Playing for and captaining my country has been the greatest privilege of my career and was literally a childhood dream come true.”
“I’m very lucky to have the job I do, and I’m grateful to be recognized for what I find so fulfilling,” he added. “I think this news will take a while to sink in, but I’m extremely proud and it’s a very emotional moment to share with my family.”
After informing her mother of the award, she posted a photo on Instagram, writing, “My mother cried when we arrived, cried at lunch, and cried on the way home. It was a special moment for all of us.”
After Beckham’s ceremony, he will choose to use his new official name, Sir David Beckham. Former United manager Sir Alex Ferguson was knighted in 1999 and admitted he was unsure whether to accept the new title, but was encouraged to do so by a relative.
“I told my family that,” Ferguson told United’s official magazine in 2000. “Kathy was kind of like, ‘Oh, I don’t know, but what would dad think?'” And her son said, “Mom, we have nothing to do with dad’s parents.” They are gone. They will be proud of him – this cannot be denied, it is recognition of what he has done. ” We had a discussion and decided it was the right thing to do. ”
Beckham’s spouse, former Spice Girl Victoria, will also receive a new title after Tuesday’s ceremony and will be known as ‘Lady Beckham’.
The soccer legend might have attended such a ceremony much earlier had some emails allegedly criticizing the honor system and the committee not been exposed in 2017.
