EEvery season, the continent’s best strikers compete for one of world football’s most prestigious awards, the Golden Boot. However, not all goals are equally valuable. Behind the trophy is a scoring system designed to balance merit between Europe’s different leagues.
Kylian Mbapp does it again in training, and Xabi Alonso can’t hide his reaction.
Weighting system according to difficulty level
The Golden Boot is calculated by multiplying the number of goals scored by the difficulty factor of the league in which the player plays. This award thus evaluates not only the number of goals, but also the competitiveness of the tournament in which the goals were scored.
The strongest leagues, La Liga (Spain), Premier League (England), Bundesliga (Germany), Serie A (Italy) and Ligue 1 (France), have a coefficient of 2 points per goal.
Under that, leagues ranked 6th to 21st in the UEFA rankings, such as Portugal’s Primeira Liga and the Dutch Eredivisie, will be awarded 1.5 points per goal.
Finally, the remaining European leagues are considered to have a lower level of competition, so we allocate one point per goal. This system means that the same number of targets can have vastly different values in different countries.
for example:
A goal in the Premier League is worth 2 points, a goal in the Portuguese League is worth 1.5 points, and a goal in the Minor League is worth 1 point.
tie breaker
If the total score is tied, additional criteria will apply. The first criterion is player assists, and the player with the most assists is placed first. Next, playing time is also taken into account. If the score remains tied, the player who takes less time to score will be penalized. Ultimately, performance in European competitions and winning titles with the club may be taken into consideration.
Thanks to this system, the Golden Boot, despite placing special emphasis on goals scored, also rewards the quality of goals scored and the competitive situation. The award will therefore more fairly reflect who has been the most decisive scorer in European football each season.
