Piauí Esporte Club’s 20-year-old forward Anthony Ilano was killed in a tragic motorcycle accident on the BR-343 highway in the state of Piauí in the early hours of October 20th. The young athlete was returning from celebrating his father’s birthday when his motorcycle collided with a cow crossing the road.
According to a Federal Highway Police report, the accident occurred at 3:25 a.m. local time. A nearby surveillance camera recorded the moment of the collision, and Irano’s motorcycle was thrown off after colliding with the animal, which also died shortly after from its injuries. Emergency teams tried to resuscitate the football player, but were unable to prevent his death. It is not confirmed whether he was wearing a helmet, but speed appears to have been a deciding factor.

This news deeply shocked the local soccer community. Piauí Esporte club released an emotional statement mourning the player’s death. “We are deeply saddened by the departure of Anthony Illano, who was an exemplary boy on and off the field,” the club said on social media. “He has been part of our family since 2024 and was the key to winning the Campeonato Piauiense U-20 title.”
His former clubs Associao Atlética de Altos and Fluminense PI also paid tribute to the striker, describing him as “a humble talent, always smiling and with a big future ahead of him”.
Ilano made his professional debut for Altos in 2023 against Remo in Serie C, and his progress has established him as one of the most promising players in Piauí football. He scored 28 goals in the youth team and was set to participate in the Copa do Brasil U-20 and the prestigious Copa São Paulo Junior along with Piauí.
The Piauí Football Federation ordered a minute’s silence at all matches over the weekend, while hundreds of fans, teammates and family members attended a vigil in Altos to bid farewell to the young man.
Fate cut short a career that had just begun. Anthony Ilano, who will be remembered for his joy and ambition, has left a gaping hole in Brazilian football as it mourns the loss of one of its most beloved promises.
