IIt’s not easy to win in any sport for a long period of time. This is especially true in team sports, where it is difficult for an individual player to stand out among a large number of teammates and opponents. But for the past 20 years, the conversation in soccer has been dominated by two players.
Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo have won every imaginable victory. They have scored an incredible amount of goals and provided hundreds of assists. They don’t have anything to prove anymore, but they continue to set records and win games by being catalysts for club and national teams. On Saturday, the two sides faced off again, and once again one had to try to outdo the other.
Messi is unstoppable | Nashville 2-5 Inter Miami | Highlights | MLS
Cristiano Ronaldo scores an amazing goal for Al Nasr, Leo Messi scores a hat-trick for Inter Miami
Early on Saturday morning, Ronaldo reached 800 goals for the club with a stunning top-90 finish from outside the box. It was vintage Ronaldo, reminding many of his iconic goal against FC Barcelona during his time with Real Madrid.
Of course, Messi couldn’t let Ronaldo have fun on Saturday. Later that night, the Argentine put on a show as Inter Miami faced Nashville SC in the final match of the MLS regular season.
Messi scored not one, not two, but three goals. He also recorded an assist in Miami’s 5-2 win over Nashville, moving him one step away from becoming the first player to reach 400 career assists.
With this performance, Messi secured his place as the top scorer and ensured that he would be named MLS MVP for the second consecutive year. Whatever Ronaldo did, Messi tried to do better. And vice versa. If only we could do it until the end of time.
