The United States and Australia will clash this week to continue preparations for the 2026 World Cup. Gregg Berhalter will lead the USMNT and strengthen the team’s key points as it gradually develops. His country will be one of the three hosts of the next international mega-cup.
Australia defeated Saudi Arabia to qualify directly for the World Cup, making it their seventh World Cup appearance in a row. Both Oceania and North America have already qualified for the 2026 World Cup, so these friendlies could be crucial for building and planning the starting squads representing each country.
Diego Luna scores a great goal before Team USA faces Ecuador
Mauricio Pochettino’s USMNT come from behind to draw against Ecuador
In the past five games, the U.S. team has two wins, two losses, and one tie. They defeated Guatemala (2-1) in the Gold Cup, but lost to Mexico by the same score in the final of the same tournament. The USMNT lost 2-0 to South Korea and miraculously drew with Ecuador in their final friendly, scoring one goal on each side of the scoreboard.
Ecuador took the lead in the 24th minute with a goal from Enel Valencia. The Ecuadorian striker took advantage of a quick counter-attack centered around John Yeboah and assisted the goal with a low shot that hit the American goalkeeper’s left post. In the second half, the North American team managed to equalize after a collective play that ended with a shot by Folarin Balogun (71st minute).
The draw did not affect the rhythm of the match. Both teams continued to attack, with Ecuador looking to take the lead again. Leonardo Campana had a chance to head home in the 80th minute, but his shot was saved by goalkeeper Matt Freese. Despite the efforts of both teams, the scoreline remained unchanged until the end of the game.
Australia narrowly defeated Canada
The Oceanian nation, on the other hand, has fared much better than the USMNT in their last five games. In the final tournament, they defeated Japan (1-0), eliminated Saudi Arabia (2-1), narrowly lost to New Zealand, then won 3-1, and ended up playing a complicated match against Canada (1-0). These results suggest that the upcoming duel will be more than interesting.
Specifically regarding their last matchup, Australia went to Saputo Stadium in Montreal and defeated Canada 1-0 with a second-half goal from Nestry Ilankunda. The Maple Leafs tried everything they could to capitalize on the momentum of the home crowd and score a tying goal, but they repeatedly ran into Australia’s impenetrable defensive wall and were unable to concede anything.
The score didn’t move any further, and it was a heartbreaking loss at home for Canada, who have yet to find the consistency they need to win over fans as they prepare to host the 2026 World Cup. They will now face Colombia in a friendly, also on the FIFA schedule. Australia will continue to play warm-up games when they play away against the United States.
