tSouth American qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup are in a critical stage. 17 and 18 games will be played on Thursday, September 4th and Tuesday, September 9th, with six teams still running tickets for the rest of the World Cup hosted by the US, Mexico and Canada.

So far, Argentina, Brazil and Ecuador have already sealed their qualifications. Chile has been mathematically eliminated, with six other teams — Uruguay, Colombia, Paraguay, Venezuela, Bolivia and Peru fighting for one of the remaining three direct tickets or access to the InterContinental Playoffs.

Matches that directly affect the ranking will take place at the same time. The estimated time for these matches is 7:30 PM (ET). Only Brazil vs Chile (Match Day 17) and Ecuador vs. Argentina (Match Day 18) are exempt from this rule.

What’s at risk: location, playoffs, legacy
With only two rounds remaining, South America’s qualifying round for the 2026 World Cup will be at its most important stage. Argentina, Brazil and Ecuador are already eligible and mathematically excluded, so six teams are fighting for the final direct ticket or at least the Intercontinental playoff spot.
Uruguay: La Celeste has everything. Montevido’s draw against Peru or his final match against Chile would be enough to secure direct eligibility. Even if Venezuela or Colombia stumbled, Bielsa’s side could seal their place without playing any more. They already have at least guaranteed a playoff spot.
Colombia: Coffee growers depend on themselves. A victory over Bolivia or Venezuela would qualify them directly. Even two draws would be enough to put them in the playoffs. However, the set-up will open up the possibilities of their rivals.
Paraguay: To qualify directly, you only need one point to play against Ecuador or Peru. Like Uruguay, they will also benefit from the possibility of stumbling by Venezuela and Colombia. They’ve already secured at least a playoff spot.
Venezuela: La Vinotinto plays for its lifespan. To maintain your dreams, you will need to score four points against Argentina (Away) and Colombia (Home). If both win, then at least a playoff berth will be secured. If Argentina and Colombia win, this match day could be out as early as possible.
Bolivia: They have to beat Colombia (away) and Brazil (home) and want a disadvantaged combination for their rivals. If they lose to Colombia and Venezuela wins, they will be eliminated on this day.
Peru: They have no immediate potential for qualifications. They can only reach the playoffs if they defeat Paraguay, and if Venezuela loses both matches, Bolivia cannot get more than one point. All this depends on the difference in goals too.
