US President Donald Trump attracted attention with his easygoing comment on Friday that he could take part in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Speaking alongside FIFA President Gianni Infantino, Trump described himself as a “very good athlete” and jokingly said that he “has made his shorts so much better” and suggested that he could compete.

“I might play,” Trump said. “I’m looking at the money these soccer players are making… I might give it a try!”
His comments were made in the context of jokes and met with laughter from reporters and attendees. Trump also highlighted his youngest son, Baron, as a promising footballer.
“My son is a very good athlete and he is a good footballer. In terms of taller aspect for footballers, he is 6’9′,” he added.
Infantino responded with a smile, noting that such height could give him an advantage on the field.
The 2026 World Cup is expected to be one of the biggest tournaments in history, with matches scheduled at multiple venues in North America. The official draw for the event is planned in Washington, DC in December
Trump has publicly expressed his support for holding tournaments in the US, highlighting the importance of promoting sports and tourism.

Trump’s suggestion to perform was humorous, but he was involved in a previously high-profile football event.
Last month he attended MetLife Stadium for the Club World Cup final, in which Chelsea defeated PSG. Trump presented Chelsea and British midfielder Cole Palmer with the Golden Ball Award, staying on the stage of the medal presentation and celebrating alongside the winning team.
His presence produced a mix of reactions. Defending the appearance, his son, Eric Trump, told BBC Sports that Chelsea had invited the former president to take part in the trophy presentation.
“The winning team invited him on stage because they said that if the US president could present the Club World Cup trophy, that would be the greatest honor of their life,” explained Eric Trump.
He added that the stadium responded enthusiastically, highlighting Trump’s visibility at major sporting events.
Trump’s comments about the World Cup reflect his continued involvement with international sports. He is not expected to compete, but his remarks and public appearance show interest in maintaining his profile at prominent athletic events.
The 2026 tournament is expected to feature expanded participation and high-profile matches across the three countries, attracting considerable attention well before the official draw. Trump’s easygoing proposal has already contributed to media coverage and public debate surrounding the event, highlighting the intersection of politics, celebrities and global sports.
