Wayne Rooney fights back against Tom Brady and his football knowledge

wHen Tom Brady made an unexpected move to invest in English football. It was hailed as a groundbreaking moment.

The seven-time Super Bowl champions have attracted global attention for Birmingham City, a proud but struggling club in the second tier of England.

For fans, one of the greatest American athletes of all time promised fresh ambitions and global visibility. But in the dressing room, things weren’t that easy.

According to Wayne Rooney, manager at Brady’s arrival, the partnership quickly turned sour as NFL legend struggled to grasp the reality of the sport he was stomping on.

Recognizing a career decorated with Manchester United and the England national team, Rooney hopes to take over as Birmingham City Manager in October 2023, leading the club to the fight for promotion. Instead, the results never came to fruition.

After just 15 games, a poor form of running ended his tenure. However, in recent documentaries following Brady’s involvement at the club, it wasn’t just the team’s performance that attracted attention.

Brady has led to a response from former strikers who openly questioned Rooney’s work ethic as a coach, shedding light on their uneasy dynamics.

“I think Tom came once. It was the day before a game where the days were just a little lighter. I think he really didn’t really understand football (soccer),” Rooney told ESPN.

“But what he understands is that he is hardworking. We know that.”

For Rooney, the problem isn’t Brady’s ambitions, but his lack of understanding of how the football team works.

If the NFL operates in a season that is highly condensed in weeks between games, football will have a different balance of preparation, recovery and rotation throughout the entire tough 10-month campaign.

“Soccer (soccer) is not the NFL,” Rooney pointed out. “The NFL works for three months a year. Players need rest too, so I think he’s very unfair and the way he came out and drew that.”

The conflict of sports culture

Brady’s statement, while perhaps intended to be constructive, highlights the cultural disparity between American football.

The quarterback’s pursuit of outstanding excellence made him a legend in the NFL. There, physical preparation and strict discipline govern.

However, in football, success also relies on managing the player’s workload, keeping the team healthy, and navigating the emotional toll of constant competition.

The difference in approach may explain why Brady’s comments hit such a nerve.

For a manager under pressure, Rooney was fired just three months later. Proposals of lack of commitment can damage his reputation.

At the same time, Brady’s outsider status meant he was likely to be constantly scrutinized due to the impact he tried to have on football issues.

Despite the friction, Rooney was careful not to completely dismiss Brady’s achievements.

He described the previous quarterback as “one of the best, if not the best athletes of all time,” but revealed that the greatness of one arena does not automatically translate into expertise elsewhere.
