wAyne Rooney broke the silence with controversial words from Tom Brady, the owner of the NFL Legend and Birmingham City minority. On his new podcast, “The Wayne Rooney Show,” aired by BBC Sports, Manchester United’s all-time scorer described comments that questioned his work ethics in his brief spell as St Andrews’ manager as “very unfair.”
The seven-time Super Bowl champion joined Birmingham ownership in August 2023, just months after Nighthead Capital Management acquired the club. In a documentary following his early steps as an executive, he told his collaborators that he was “a little worried about the work ethic” of the UK coach after a visit in November 2023.

I’m glad that things are doing well in Birmingham now
“When I arrived in Birmingham, it was a mess. The players weren’t going to move the club forward. Tom came before the game and I think he didn’t understand football. He’s hardworking now.
Rooney’s spell at the club was short. He spent just 83 days and 15 games in the process, putting on a record of two wins after the team came in 20th on January 2, 2024. His successor Tony Mowbray was able to pick up some points, but health issues drove him out of work, and Birmingham was relegated to League One at the end of the 2023-24 season.
In the same documentary, Brady criticized several players on his team and called them “lazy.” “I have a deep respect for Tom Brady. He is one of the greatest sportsmen in history, and I’m pleased that in Birmingham, he’s now able to do the right thing, like driving away players who haven’t contributed. I think they’re on the right track,” the former footballer explained.
Birmingham’s return
After several seasons of drifting, the city of Birmingham enjoyed an epic revival. Under Chris Davis’ stewardship, the club achieved immediate promotion to the championship by being selected as the League One Championship with 111 points
